Work on Improvements at Pittard Sears Trailhead

Finishing Culvert Install at Pittard Sears

NC DOT is requiring TRTC to make a number of upgrades to bring the parking and fountain area and the connection trail into compliance with Federal and State disability rules.
Starting on September 27th, we moved over 10 cubic yards of crushed aggregates from the parking area at Pittard Sears Road about 175' to cover a 20 foot long plastic culvert on the west side of the ATT. A few volunteers came out on the 29th and 30th and allowed us to finish by noon on the 30th. In 2018 this culvert will be part of a new connector trail with a hard surface we'll be putting in to bring this facility into compliance with Federal and State disability rules. This surface has not been compacted and can be expected to settle and harden over the next 6 months.

Request for Public Support--Triangle Bikeway

HELP Support a bikeway along I-40 connecting the Trenton Road Greenway to the Research Triangle Park (RTP) and many other places in the area.

Wake County Commissioner Sig Hutchinson was successful in adding the "Triangle Bikeway" along I-40 to a list of projects to be evaluated for funding under CAMPO's request to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) is the regional transportation organization serving Wake, Franklyn, Granville, Harnett, and Johnston Counties.
There are more projects on the list than available funding. So, the list of projects will be prioritized. The prioritization will be determined, in part, by public comments received during the public comment period that ends Wednesday, September 20, 2017.
The Triangle Bikeway would connect the Trenton Road greenway to the RTP. This missing link would enable bike and pedestrian connections from Raleigh, Cary, and Morrisville to the RTP. It will also enable connections to many of the area’s major greenways, including: Black Creek, Reedy Creek, House Creek, Rocky Branch, Walnut Creek, American Tobacco Trail, Crabtree Creek, and the Neuse Greenways, which then allows connections to the regional/national East Coast Greenway, NC 2 (Mountains to Sea Trail), and US 1 (Carolina Connection) bike routes.
Please email your public comments in support of the "WK1. Triangle Bikeway" project receiving a high priority ranking for funding to alex.rickard@campo-nc.us by Tuesday, September 19, 2017 (their meeting is September 20).

Visioning Workshop for Durham Belt Line

Planning for the development of this 2.2 mile rail corridor in downtown Durham as a future rail trail is proceeding. On September 6th, the City will be holding a visioning workshop to solicit public input on this project. The City's new web site for this project contains history of the corridor and particulars on the workshop: https://www.facebook.com/events/800007040159585/?acontext=%7B%22action_h...

Update on Pittard Sears Parking Area

Board member cutting trees on May 2

Over the next two years we'll be doing some fairly costly upgrades at this facility to improve access to the trail and to the water fountain. We'll be doing these improvements to bring this facility into compliance with requirements set by NC DOT to carry out the Federal American Disabilities Act (ADA).
During 2017 we'll be putting in a van accessible cement parking space with an adjacent access aisle at the rear of the lot and putting in a connected cement area which will connect this parking aisle to our water fountain.

In 2018 we'll be constructing a new access trail to the ATT from the cement parking/fountain area. To do this we'll need to remove a number of trees, grind up and remove the stumps, grade and smooth the new surface to allow contract construction of a new four foot wide, 150 foot long cement connection to the trail. To allow smooth access to the ATT we'll be putting in an 18" diameter plastic culvert which will be covered over to the level of the trail.

We plan to do some portion of this work through volunteer efforts but construction of the new sidewalk will be done under contract.
UPDATE: We took down about 10 trees on May 2nd. There is lots of pine firewood stacked there--FREE for the taking!

First Workday on Culvert Repairs at the Eagle Spur Trail

On January 21st ~16 volunteers gave us great efforts to move 3 large plastic culverts about 3/4 of a mile to spots at the southern end of the trail. Over the next few months we plan to hold several workdays to install them as replacements for 40+ year old metal culverts which have failed. Putting them in will involve lots of digging to say the least. To find out more about this project and how to volunteer please see our Recruitment Flyer
