Page 5 of 'PHOTOS' includes a number of shots taken on the ATT in southern Durham County in early 2001 and throughout 2002. This section of the ATT starts south of I-40 and then runs across Massey Chapel Road, across (under) Fayetteville Road, across Scott King Road and ends at the bridge structure at Northeast Creek. This section is generally at least 10' wide and much of it is raised 10-30' above the natural level of the surrounding land. This is typical of many old RR beds and can be seen on much of the portion from Massey Chapel to Scott King. Effective March 4, 2002 Durham Parks & Rec. now has a lease with the NCDOT for most of this southern Durham section of the ATT. This will allow Durham to take an active role in managing this section. In recent years this section has seen lots of unofficial use by local walkers, cyclists and equestrians. Unfortunately, vehicular access to this section was uncontrolled until quite recently and significant volumes of household and construction trash accumulated. The following pictures show just a few of the areas needing clean-up or other maintenance. TRTC is committed to restoring the natural beauty to this section. Thru its advocacy and it's Friends of the ATT TRTC will be vigorous in getting clean-ups accomplished. Cleanup efforts during the fall of 2001 and thru November 2002 have made good progress on removing the trash seen here. In early December 2002 a severe ice storm brought down numerous trees, rendering over a mile of this section impassible. Several more workdays are planned for January thru May 2003 to cut and remove these trees, continue efforts to grade and fill in low spots, install about 1000' of fencing, and complete the removal of trash.

So far, these bollards seem to be sharply reducing the amount of new trash dumped
on the trail.
